MISSION

Beiragel, S.A. offers the market high quality food products, guaranteeing the satisfaction of all interested parties, including Employees, Customers, Suppliers and Partners. Thus guaranteeing the satisfaction and loyalty of the final consumer through the quality and safety of our products.

THE COMPANY

Founded in October 1985, Beiragel is located in the urban area of the city of Viseu and is dedicated to the trade and transformation of frozen food products.

Its main objective was to supply small businesses located in the Center Region of the country. The main markets were located in the districts of Viseu and Guarda, and in part of the districts of Coimbra and Aveiro. The supply to these customers was, and still is, ensured by Beiragel’s own distribution fleet.

Motivated by the rapid growth of its market share and the high demand of the sector, it felt the need to create its own brand for frozen fish.

Thus, it was decided to create a continuous transformation line that would allow obtaining high quality products. These products, together with the Beiragel brand, are today easily associated with the image of quality that the company always intended to convey to the consumer.

With the aim of solidifying the company’s image in the market, it chose to supply some stockists, who thus ensure a market for Beiragel branded products in areas that our distribution fleet does not cover.

During 2001, the company underwent major transformations, such as the change from a Private Limited Company to a Public Limited Company, creation of the Quality Department, expansion of its physical facilities (to a covered area of approximately 3,500 square meters in Viseu), restructuring of the Commercial Department, etc.

Due to the continued investment policy, it acquired, during 2005, its own facilities in Castelo Branco, with a covered area of about 750 square meters, which enabled the expansion of the areas covered by direct distribution, and, consequently, the conquest of new customers.

In geographic areas not covered by our distribution, we continue to make commercial agreements with new warehouses located outside these same areas of influence.

The community and international markets continue to be interesting markets for Beiragel as we export regularly, and we have good prospects for growth in these markets in the medium and long term.

Beiragel is increasingly assuming itself as a primarily industrial company, the weight of total sales in this industrial area has always been above 50%, having in the current year 2022, and in the year 2021, reached 58% and 63 % respectively, leaving no doubt in relation to its main activity, which is the food industry, with the commercial aspect representing a weight of around 40%.

It should be noted, however, that, in recent years, the weight in sales of finished products of the Beiragel brand has been increasing, and in this sense the company has maintained its commitment to ensuring high levels of quality of the products that it makes available to all consumers.

Since 2007, the strategy has also included extending these quality standards both to internal procedures and to management processes, culminating in this strategy, still in the course of that year, with the attribution by IAPMEI of the Statute of PME Líder, which aims to distinguish companies that achieve high performance in terms of Management, and that present a low risk profile.

At the beginning of 2008, this whole strategy based on quality was recognized with the certification of processes for the design, production and marketing of frozen and refrigerated food products, in accordance with the NP EN ISO 9001 standard, and also, in accordance with the requirements of the Food Safety System resulting from the HACCP Food Safety methodology, both issued by TUV Rheinland Portugal. This certification still stands today.

From 2008 to 2018, Beiragel has been, every year, distinguished by IAPMEI with the PME Líder status, and for several years we also obtained the distinction of PME Excelência, these awards being attributed to the PME’s whose Management indicators were considered to be the best among the more than 300,000 in activity (INE data – 2008). The only year in which we were not PME Líder was 2019 in which the financial indicators were “less good”, as a direct consequence of the fire in our facilities in 2018.

During 2011, Beiragel’s headquarters facilities underwent a remodeling process. With this refurbishment, Beiragel intended to carry out a major intervention in the “transformation room”, providing it with more and better industrial equipment, as well as providing the entire building with adequate facilities for the growth that the company has had in recent years, both in terms of its employees, or in terms of all logistics linked to industrial activity.

This refurbishment was completed during 2014, and the building was left with a total area of more than 4 thousand square meters, and with a working room equipped with modern equipment, with ample space, and, both in terms of offices, both in terms of other social facilities, the company was perfectly dimensioned for the increase in employees that was taking place.

In early 2018, Beiragel began designing a new intervention in the industrial building, with the aim of joining this building to another existing building on the adjacent plot of land (in the final stages of construction), thus optimizing production circuits, circulation areas and the storage capacity.

However, in the early hours of June 20, 2018, a fire broke out at Beiragel’s manufacturing facilities, completely destroying the entire headquarters building, industrial and administrative equipment, as well as all stocks that were in stock, making the entire project unfeasible. which was being envisioned…

The building that was in the final stages of construction (warehouse), and which was not affected by the accident, was immediately intervened in order to convert it, in the shortest possible time, into an industrial unit that would allow it to return to work and maintain the activity until then carried out in the previous installations.

During 2019, the building, with an area of approximately 2,600 square meters, was duly licensed and operational, which allowed us to start gradually resuming our industrial activity, which at the end of that year already represented more than 50% of the Beiragel’s turnover.

Resuming the project conceived at the beginning of 2018, Beiragel proceeded during 2020 to rebuild the damaged building, erecting it adjacent to the building reconverted in the previous year, now having a total built area of 4,460m2.

This building has a larger area than the building consumed by the flames in 2018, a larger storage area, and a larger, more functional working room with a higher installed production capacity.
